Is there anyway to add transmission oil to a 1998 mtd hydrostatic riding lawnmower, I heard that this may be a sealed unit.

Your transmission is most probably a sealed unit. Do you have a model number of the MTD tractor?

From your model number it appears that your tractor does indeed have a sealed transmission. No additional oil should be required and the unit is not servicable. There are a couple of seals that are replacable but that is about it.
